May 12, 2016 – With a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas State University Opera Theater has commissioned a brand new opera based on the life and legacy of Claudia Alta Taylor Johnson, better known to all of us as “Ladybird” – the elegant first lady of which the Hill Country is rightly so proud.  The opera will be performed on the Cailloux Stage on Thursday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m.

The new opera, titled simply “Ladybird,” was created by two giants in the world of American music.  Composer Henry Mollicone became famous for the score to the haunting “Face In the Barroom Floor,” and the libretto was crafted by internationally famous lyricist Sheldon Harnick, one half of the team that created “Fiddler On the Roof” and many others.

Working together with Texas Hill Country Opera and Arts, The Cailloux Theater is fortunate to be among the very first to host a performance of this new work after its World Premiere in San Marcos in April, 2016.  This promises to be an historic evening, and one we know you won’t want to miss.
